Lawn Top Dressing

Topdressing is done using the highest quality soil mixes available. By adding soil aggregates such as sand, silt, organic matter, and carbon to your lawn, Hippie Fertilizing can improve its soil structure. For greater saturation, we can enhance moisture retention and permeability during irrigation and rain. In addition to improving soil nutrient retention, topdressing facilitates plant nutrient uptake as well.

We asked if chemical lawn treatments can cause skin allergies.

Heres the answer:

Yes, chemical lawn treatments can definitely cause dogs to have skin irritation and reactions that look like allergies.

While these reactions are often classified as contact dermatitis (a direct irritation or chemical burn) or a toxic reaction rather than a true immune-system allergy, the symptoms for your dog are the same: intense itching, redness, and discomfort.

Here’s a breakdown of how it happens and the symptoms to watch for:

How Chemical Lawn Treatments Affect a Dog's Skin

  • Direct Contact: Herbicides (weed killers), pesticides (insect killers), and fertilizers contain chemicals that can irritate or burn a dog's skin, especially on the paws, legs, and underside. This happens when a dog walks, runs, or rolls on a treated lawn before the product has completely dried.

  • Ingestion (Self-Grooming): Dogs often lick and chew their paws and legs.If chemical residue is on their fur or paws, they ingest it, which can lead to systemic toxic effects and/or cause irritation in their mouth, throat, and digestive system.

  • A "True" Allergy Trigger: In some cases, the chemicals can act as a trigger or allergen, causing a hypersensitive immune reaction (similar to environmental allergies).

Common Symptoms of Exposure

If your dog has been in contact with a freshly treated lawn, watch for signs of skin irritation, which often focus on the areas closest to the ground:

  • Excessive Licking, Chewing, or Biting (especially at the paws/feet)

  • Redness or a Rash on the paws, legs, or belly

  • Visible Burns or Blisters on the paw pads

  • Sneezing or Coughing (if the fumes were inhaled)

In cases of more serious ingestion, your dog may also show symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or tremors, which require immediate veterinary attention.

So we ask, is the weed killer worth it?

We say no!
